Maggi noodles

Maggi noodles is pervasive and found everywhere even more than aloo parathas. Finding local food was a challenge. We were lucky because our guide Keerti Singh found dabbas that would provide us with good local fare.

In Kedarnath however you get good local food for Rs. 200 a plate. Local rice, dal, and vegetables. Most food places on the char dham route are vegetarian.

Dabbas

Dabbas cook on wood fire typically. Waiting for food to cook as we watched the Himalayan scenery was fun. We always chose scenic dabbas with pleasant cooks.

Local food

Finding local food takes a little effort but its worth every bit. Dabbas are the best places to look for local food.
Simple Dal chawal is great especially when the rice and dal are all local.

Missi roti is made of besan (chickpeas flour) and cabbage mostly.
Aloo paratha, Lengda sabji, and dahi.

Radish Paratha and Radish sabji.

The best place to eat Momos in Srinagar is at Chauhan Bengali sweets.

Sweets

Sweets are generally good in Uttrakhand since there is plenty of milk production in the state.

Wild Himalayan food (Lengda)

Lengda (Diplazium esculentum Retz) grows only in the wild. Really delicious and tastes a little like Asparagus. Though you can find them for sale in markets, most restaurants do not have it in their menu. Our guide Keerti Singh helped with getting Lengda cooked for us in small dabbas. Must try dish.
